How to import a car from Germany to Spain
Documents, taxes, ITV and realistic timescales, with a worked cost example.
Once the car is found, it usually takes 3 to 5 weeks: a few days to inspect and buy it, about a week of transport and two to three weeks of paperwork in Spain, depending on queues at the DGT (the Spanish traffic authority). We give you an estimated date with your proposal. The details are in the guide How long it takes to import a car.
Yes. Paste the link in the second step of the request. We check that the seller and the car are what they seem, negotiate in their language, inspect the car and take care of secure payment and everything else.
The car is insured during transport. For driving it, if you wish, we pass your request to a registered insurance intermediary, who will offer you an agreed-value policy for the day you receive the car. More about agreed-value insurance.
It depends on the car and its emissions. On top of the price of the car come transport, the Spanish registration tax, homologation and ITV, DGT fees and number plates, and our service fee. Within the EU, VAT is paid only once and is included; from outside the EU, customs duties and import VAT are added. We give you the total as one fixed price before anything is bought. The step-by-step process is in our guide How to import a car from Germany to Spain.
In the mid-range and premium segments it usually is: Germany has far more choice, cars tend to be better equipped and better maintained, and the purchase price is often lower. But what counts is the total cost once registered, and it is not always cheaper. The savings disappear if it is done blind, with a miscalculated registration tax or a car with a dubious history. That is why we give you the final fixed price before buying, so you can compare it with the same car in Spain. The three ways of doing it are compared in the guide Importing a car yourself, with an agency or with an importer.
From the seller: both parts of the registration certificate, the purchase contract and, if the car has one, the certificate of conformity (COC); without a COC, homologation takes longer. With these the car passes the pre-registration ITV, the registration tax and the local road tax are paid, and the registration is requested from the DGT. We request and handle all of it. Step by step in the guide How to register an imported car in Spain.
